 A History Lesson

-Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it-

Long ago, there was anger in this land. The wolves grumbled beneath the rule of the horses, living as scattered packs on the fringes of the land. But one day, they’d had enough. The three Wolf Lords rose up against the three Horse Lords, starting a war which terrorized all of the land. The Earth was thrown into chaos, the harmony of nature disrupted by the bloodshed going on around her. That is when the Spirits stepped in.

There were Seven of them, all connected to the world in some way. There was Mountain, Desert, Field, Water, Forest, and the two most powerful spirits of all; Life and Death. They walked on the earth in their mortal forms, working together to halt the bloodshed and restore order to the land.

They brought equality, also, deciding that the Nobles should share the Royal lands; wolf and horse, ruling together. It worked, to. But it also brought with it its own kind of division. Slowly the herds and packs began follow different Spirits, coming to believe some Spirits were better than others. The herds and Packs began to refer to which Spirit you followed as you “alignment.”

The Spirits began to enjoy this attention, and lingered longer and longer on earth in their mortal forms. All was not well with the Spirits, though. There was anger, and resentment between them. Or, at least, one of them felt like there was. Life was forever looking over her shoulder, suspicious of the other Spirits. She was the most revered Spirit, and she thought the others wanted the respect the herds and packs gave her. And her mind, her greatest enemy was Death.

Death himself was a fine spirit. He was not bloodthirsty as one would imagine, but understood that all things die in their own time, and that there was no need to worry about. Many of the horses and wolves who revered Death were considered morbid, but only because of the idea of worship Death was so unusual. Life cared little about any of this, though, and simply wanted to remove the threat.

At mid day she enacted her plan, coming up to Death when he was in mortal form. She ripped his heart out of his chest, a wicked smile on her face as the Spirit faded away. It is possible for a Spirit to die if their mortal form was destroyed, and Life knew this well enough. Death looked into her face in surprise, but as his anger welled inside of him, he couldn’t help but exact revenge on any living thing he could. And he did, devastating the earth. Death slaughtered the other Spirits, he burned the trees, destroyed the fields, did whatever he could to harm all living things. Many, many horses and wolves died on that day.

As the massacre ended, and the Spirits left earth forever, the last survivors turned upon each other. Those who had worshiped Life were shunned by many, gaining the nickname “Darks” or “Tainted.” Those that shunned them, the followers of many of the other Spirits, called themselves the “Lights” and “Untainted.” And of course, as with every argument, there was the middle ground, those felt the followers of either side could not be blamed. They were named Neutrals.

Many Years have passed since then, and the Spirits have passed into Myth. The alignments created after the disaster still stand, though, dividing the Lords and creating strife. The alignments are simply titles, but the packs and herds cannot get beyond their division, even if they no longer remember why they were divided in the first place. There is a constant battle for the position of a Royal, for only three Lords have risen to take on the responsibility. But what secrets is the future hiding from us? Maybe the Spirits will rise again and bring back harmony, and maybe this land has past more complicated than any had ever imagined.
